Home of Tuckerton Seaport Located east of Philadelphia and south of New York City, Tuckerton is commonly known as the nation's third point of entry. The area is famous for its rich history in water and marine activities. It provides great opportunities for fishing, diving, clamming, crabbing and other water sports.The area of Tuckerton was first settled in 1768. Edward Andrews, one of the first settlers, built a grist mill on the site of a beaver dam at the mouth of Tuckerton Creek. Built in 1704, it is still standing today. The town has had several former names, including Andrew Mills, Middle-of-the-Shore, Clamtown, Fishtown and Quakertown. It was named Tuckerton in honor of its founder, Ebenezer Tucker. To learn more about Tuckerton's history, visit some of the many great museums in the area, such as Tuckerton Historical Society Museum and Tuckerton Seaport on Main Street. The Tuckerton Seaport is a wonderful 40-acre working maritime museum and village. It features a maritime forest, wetlands nature trail and 17 historic buildings that have been recreated and are connected with a boardwalk. In 2010 the Seaport, a member of the Council of American Maritime Museums, celebrated 10 years. Along Main Street you will also find shops and stores. South of Route 539 is Lake Pohatcong. It features a Duck Decoy-shaped billboard that advertises the annual Decoy show held in September around Tip Seaman Park. During the winter holidays this duck decoy is replaced with a Christmas tree. In 1995 a boardwalk along the side of the road overhanging the lake was installed. While walking around Main Street stop by Stewart's Drive-In for a meal in a classic 1950s style restaurant, open since 1970. It is particularly famous for its Stewart's Fountain Classics root beer and hot dogs. Tuckerton abuts the New Jersey Pine Barrens, an area noted for hiking, kayaking, biking, bird watching, canoeing, and eco-tour adventures. Tuckerton is a politically independent municipality surrounded by the Little Egg Harbor Township, formed in 1740 from portions of Northampton Township. Little Egg Harbor also has a very rich and interesting history. Places of interest include Storybook Land that has been keeping the spirit of childhood alive in an entertaining and educational atmosphere for over 50 years; and Harbor Pines Golf Club, designed by Stephen Kay for the average golfer. Visit the Historic Batsto Village in the Wharton State Forest, a settlement where cannonballs that were used in the War of 1812 and the Revolutionary War were made. Music lovers can enjoy a bluegrass concert at Albert Music Hall, a modern music venue in Waretown. The hall also houses archives about life in the Pine Barrens. Nice dining places in the area are the Tuckerton Pub and Panini Bay Waterfront Restaurant that has a great chef and wonderful menu. Visit the Watermark Gallery and the Noyes Art Museum to enjoy amazing art and shop at H.G. Marshall & CO., Olde Bay Country Shoppe and the Tuckerton Emporium.
