Taos - History, Native Americans and the Traditional Atmosphere of New Mexico

Taos is a town in New Mexico that is also the county seat of Taos County. One of the most interesting sites in the county is Taos Pueblos. It is an ancient Native American town. The tribe that continues to inhabit to the area is the Pueblo. Taos Pueblo is more than 1,000 years old and has preserved the lifestyle of the tribe. It features many residential buildings coloured in red and brown. The place is a National Historic Landmark and it is listed as a World Heritage Site. An interesting fact is that some Indians living in Taos Pueblo continue to practice their own religions, following ancient rituals and customs. It is one of the most photographed places in the whole state of New Mexico.
The name Taos originates from the Taos language and it means "place of red willows". The art colony of the city appeals to most visitors, as there are many artists' ateliers to go to. Don't miss the houses and studios of artists like Leon Gaspard, Ernest Martin, Eanger Irving and the Fechin Institute. A must-see is the Blumenschein Home and Museum whose former owner is responsible for the creation of the art colony in Taos. The immense beauty of the city and the unique atmosphere has drawn artists from around the world to this divine place.
From an historical point of view, probably the most visited building is the Governor Bent Home where the first governor of New Mexico lived and was killed. Another catching-eye place is the Kit Carson Home and Museum displaying his life as well as frontier life in the town. Kit Carson Park is a great option for walks around Taos. One place you shouldn't miss: the Hacienda de los Martines, which was the home of padre Antonio Jose Martinez. It remains one of the greatest examples of a hacienda in Spanish Colonial style. The house was built in the 19th century and its original look has been preserved. Another must-see sight is the Church of San Francisco de Asis, which is an exquisite example of the traditional churches constructed in New Mexico during the Spanish mission. And last but not least, is the Ranch of the famous English writer D.H. Lawrence, who once lived in Taos.
The Rio Grande and Taos Valley offers a variety of options for summer activities such as rafting, biking in the mountains, riding, fly-fishing and golfing. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad passes nearby also, so you can ski in the winter in Taos Ski Valley, Angel Fire and Sipapu.
