Mantoloking, New Jersey - Gold Mine on the Coastline Pronounced "Man-tah-low-king" this small borough is a real king among all other boroughs in the United States. Its name comes from a Lenni Lenape Indians word with an unknown meaning, but some say it means "land of beautiful sunsets", "sandy place" or "frog ground".Mantoloking is ranked at number 15th position among the highest-income places in the country, nevertheless its population is no more than 300 people. Mantoloking is located in Ocean County, New Jersey, on the Barnegat Peninsula (Island Beach Peninsula), a 20-mile long barrier peninsula separating Barnegat Bay and the ocean. The peninsula is popular as a summer colony and with undeveloped coastline declared as a reserve, Island Beach State Park. The borough is connected to the mainland with the Mantoloking Bridge which was built in late 19th century by Captain John Arnold who had arrived in Mantoloking to work for the Seashore Improvement Company and Seashore Land Company and, which boosted the local growth. He was also the first postmaster of the borough. Until then the area had been within the Township of Brick. About that time were founded the famous local Yacht Club, and The Church of St. Simon-by- the-Sea. Yet no road connected the borough to Bay Head and the north part was developed much later. It was after the World War II when the land area was sold and the real development began. The Mantoloking Golf Club was opened in 1897, which later turned into the famous The Mantoloking Yacht Club. It was incorporated officially in April, 1911. The architecture style is mainly Shingle Style. There are also a few colonial houses as well as some designed by Stanford White. Today Mantoloking is part of the “Gold Coast” in New Jersey as the closest bigger cities are Lakewood and Toms River. And it really is gold! If you compare the cost of living in Mantoloking to the rest of the country, you will see that it is 162.50% higher than the average. The median home cost is more than 1,100,000 million. A great way to experience the coastline is sailing on the famous River Belle along Barnegat Bay, Point Pleasant Canal and the Manasquan River. A few other tourist sites include Anchor And Palette Art Gallery, Sunday Peacock Art Gallery, and Global Outdoor. Golf is available at the closeby Castaway Cove, Castaway Cove and Lions Head Country Club. Jenkinson's Aquarium is the only zoo and amusement park in the area. It covers 1 mile on the coastline and its Broadwalk will take your kids on a fun journey with rides like Moby Dick, Himalaya, Bumber Cars and Swing Ride, while adults can enjoy an event in Jenkinson's Entertainment Complex. The nearby Silverton Park and Cattus Island Park will provide the necessary relaxation for those of you who need some outdoor tranquility. The Windward Beach is also very nice for relaxation. Located on the Metedeconck River you will find a nice beach and a few children playground.. If you visit the area in the summer you can enjoy ant of the outdoor summer concerts during the SummerFest. Shelter Cove Park is another nearby park with lots of sports playgrounds like tennis courts, baseball fields, sand volleyball courts and soccer fields. Visiting Mantoloking is like visiting a gold mine located on the coastline. Maybe its time to be renamed from “frog ground” to “gold ground” or “money ground” just to be in touch with the contemporary lifestyle.
