Kalispell - An Eclectic Mix of the Best of Montana Tucked into the wild beauty of the state of Montana, in Glacier County, Kalispell is a small but energetic city, situated along the Continental Divide, only few minutes from the world famous Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake. This spirited and warmhearted community will amaze you with its bright palette of outdoor opportunities, intriguing museums, exciting theatre performances, rich shopping and dining options and sophisticated art events. Kalispell provides a promising balance of everything needed for an unforgettable vacation in Montana. The founder of the community was Charles Conrad; he established the township in 1891 where he had a hunch that a railroad would pass though. He opened the Kalispell Townsite Company, a bank and a mansion with 26 rooms. Presently, his estates are part of the historical heritage of the city, now functioning as museums, inns, and art centers. Kalispell is among the cities that honour their past, and has built a future on its foundations. Stroll along Kalispell's Main Street where contemporary edifices are peacefully lined up alongside impressive examples of older architecture, housing art galleries, studios, restaurants, offices, and boutiques. The Main Street is an illustration of the common co-existence of the old and the new and this harmony can easily be felt floating in the air. Kalispell takes pride in its 20 parks, some of which are adjacent to or embracing former structures from the past. Such are Courthouse Park, the Conrad Mansion grounds and Depot Park. Woodland Park enjoys the reputation and the attendance of the largest park in the community. It is an excellent sight family fun all year round. The city parks are perfect for a relaxing day or a picnic. Buffalo Hill Golf Course is in an area where Conrad's buffalo herd used to graze. As the county seat and the largest city in Flathead County, Kalispell is full of fascinating things to do and see, appreciated by every visitor. We cannot neglect the fact that Kalispell serves as a gateway to the Glacier National Park, which is the main reason for the crowds of tourists in the summer. Only 30 minutes drive from the city, Jewel Basin affords a wonderful network of hiking trails, each one revealing breathtaking views of the mountains and the majestic Flathead Lake. If you are a ski enthusiast you shouldn't miss visiting The Whitefish Mountain Resort in the winter, guaranteeing skiing adventures on the challenging slopes. If you happen to be there during the spring or the summer the available gondola ride will carry you over some of the most majestic views of the Glacier National Park. Many people pass through Kalispell on their way to the tempting fishing destinations on the shores of the largest freshwater lake west of the Continental Divide - Flathead Lake. The weather in Kalispell is not as severe as in some other places in Montana; it seems that Kalispell is a concentration of all the best features of the state. The towering mountains of the continental divide partially protect the city form the cold air streams coming from Great Falls in the winter months. Simultaneously, the surrounding mountains play the role of a natural cooler during the summer, when most of the cities in Montana are much hotter. The summer climate is more than pleasant; the sunny season starts form July and continues to September. Clouds at night make the temperatures warm and the days cooler. The wettest month is June.
