    Once, Captain Vancouver anchored his ships along the shore, which is abundant with birch trees that give the bay its name. The first to live here and name it, however, were the Native Americans.
    There are groups of people who consider the place to be one of the most unique places for one particular activity: bird watching. Birch Bay and the neighbouring Blaine are a genuine paradise for bird-lovers. Birch Bay State Park, Drayton Harbor and Blaine's Marine Park are the best birding places on the Cascade Loop of the Washington State Birding Trail. There are many viewpoints where you can catch a glimpse of the nesting eagles. The region is also home to large heron rookery, shorebirds and waterfowls in the winter, spring and autumn.
     Birch Bay State Park is spread across 194 acres, with 8,255 feet of saltwater shoreline and 14,923 feet of freshwater shoreline along Terrell Creek. The park provides marvelous panoramas of the Cascade Mountains and Canadian Gulf Islands, which also abound with archeological sites.
    You can avail yourself of the services of Sail Away and choose from sunset sails, day sails or overnight rides to the the Sunshine Coast, San Juan Islands or Canadian Gulf Islands, especially if you are planning a romantic excursion amid the azure waters and the somnolent murmur of the ocean.
