Atlantic City, New Jersey - It's More than just Gambling

Vacation Homes Atlantic City Holiday RentalsAre you looking for an exciting place for your next vacation? Do you love resorts and casinos? Well, you don't have to go all the way to Las Vegas to experience some of the best gambling in the United States. Atlantic City in the State of New Jersey offers much of what Sin City has, but there are beaches as well. Actually, Atlantic City has earned itself the nickname Las Vegas of the East. There are definitely similarities, especially when it comes to the name-brand hotels and casinos that you will find here. But there are also plenty of differences that make Atlantic City a destination in its own right.

Atlantic City can be found on Absecon Island, and it's no surprise where it gets is name, since it is on the Atlantic Ocean. The city has been a resort since before it even officially became a city, which happened in 1854. Within twenty years, half a million visitors were riding the newly built railroads to get to Atlantic City.

If you are looking for a throwback while on vacation, stroll along the boardwalk and just think - the first one built in the United States, constructed way back in 1870, was located right here. Starting at Absecon Inlet, you can wander the boardwalk for four miles, breathing in the sea air, playing games, grabbing a bite to eat and some souvenirs, or just taking it all in.

Hotel after hotel followed the construction of the boardwalk, and during the early 20th century there was a boom that helped create the Atlantic City that you can see today. During this time, it was called the World's Playground, which also hints at the illegal consumption of alcohol and gambling. But that was all during Prohibition. Today, you can enjoy a day at the slots and a night on the town, including drinks, with no worries. Gambling has been legal in Atlantic City since 1976.

There are currently 12 casino hotels that you can choose from, some with more than 2,000 rooms. Each has a different theme, from the Roaring Twenties at the Resorts Casino Hotel, to the Roman Empire at Caesars Atlantic City. Or check out the Old Havana theme at the Tropicana Atlantic City. But it's not all about gambling, even though Atlantic City is also called the “gambling capital of the East Coast”. There's shopping, shopping and more shopping alongside all the casinos and hotels. Malls and department stores are available, but many people come to Atlantic City for the high-end shopping that can be found here, as well as outlet stores. So whether you are looking for luxury or a bargain, you are sure to find it in Atlantic City.

But what about some activities that don't involve spending money or betting money? Visit Absecon Light, New Jersey's tallest lighthouse. Or make your way two miles south of the city to Margate City to see Lucy the Elephant. Take a photograph, since she's an icon worth capturing on film. The six-story structure is now a museum. And don't forget, Atlantic City is located right on the Atlantic Ocean, so beaches are a hit. There are also plenty of golf courses, nightclubs, restaurants, and did we mention casinos already? Plan your visit around one of the popular festivals like the Boardwalk Rodeo, Atlantic City Restaurant Week or the Atlantic City Airshow. Don't worry if you don't want to stay in a casino hotel or resort. There are campgrounds, bed and breakfasts and hotels and motels that will fit any budget. Visit Atlantic City and you'll find there's more to it than just gambling.
