Ecotourism in Batanes Island, Philippines

The province of Batanes is some 180 km away from the northernmost point of the Philippines' Luzon Island. The province is a group of small islands that chose to preserve its naturally beautiful rolling hills and mountains, pristine beaches and stunning landscape. The Ivantans (natives of Batanes) opted not for modernisation to attract more tourists but for ecotourism so as to preserve its cultural and natural resources.
The identity of the Ivatan is one of self-sustainability and independence. The reason may have been due to the isolation of the place. The natives catch or plant or rear their own food. A tourist who happens to pass by an Ivantan's house would most likely be invited in the house.
There are no sprawling luxurious hotels in Batanes. However, there are rooms and small cottages for rent. Getting to Batanes is by airplane and the only other option is a long boat ride from the shores of Ilocos Norte, Luzon.
Trekking, swimming, mountaineering, caving, swimming, island hopping, snorkelling and scuba diving are activities that are enjoyed in this ecotourism haven. A tourist in Batanes might be surprised by the lack of modern amenities but the feeling will soon pass away as he is exposed to the genuine hospitality and honesty of the natives and the beautiful landscape and seascape of Batanes.
Ecotourism is well and thriving in Batanes. The group of islands is now in the list of tentative World Heritage Sites.
